Unmanned Life has successfully forged public and private partnerships to establish itself as a key player in enabling 5G adoption in the autonomous economy. In 2018 in Europe, British Telecom (BT), Verizon and Ericsson partnered with Unmanned Life to conduct the World’s First Fully Autonomous Transatlantic 5G Low Latency Drone Swarm. In a similar partnership in the US, at Operation Convergent Response (OCR 2018), a global public safety conference, Unmanned Life demonstrated its latest technology in collaboration with Verizon and Nokia, in an emergency response scenario by deploying a fully autonomous multi-drone swarm to assist the rescue teams. Building on our success in 2018, Unmanned Life has been selected in 2019 as one of the top-15 fast-growing companies chosen to work directly with Deutsche Telekom to integrate Deutsche Telekom’s 5G infrastructure and the MobiledgeX platform to control a swarm of autonomous drones for a variety of use cases. In the EU public sector, Unmanned Life has been selected as a partner of choice for the ‘5G!Drones’ program, the European Union’s flagship 5G program, with some of the leading industrial leaders including Nokia, Orange, Thales and Airbus. These deployments have created a success trajectory for Unmanned Life that keeps us on course for continued success.

In 2018, Unmanned Life joined hands with Verizon and Nokia to demonstrate the power of Unmanned Life’s Autonomy-as-a-Service for public safety and emergency response applications. At the expo, a helicopter crash scenario was simulated where a civilian helicopter had a crash as a result of engine failures. Unmanned Life deployed a swarm of fully autonomous drones powered by its proprietary software platform to assist rescue teams in their operations. Each drone in the swarm was responsible for a specific task which ranged from providing reconnaissance through a live video feed to filming in real-time the unfolding actions at the rescue site to dropping emergency supplies.

Europe’s first and only fully autonomous sorting centre for Swiss Post

In yet another achievement, Unmanned Life demonstrated the capabilities of its Autonomy-as-a-Service software platform when it deployed Europe’s first autonomous sorting centre at Swiss Post’s facilities in 2018.

 

Swiss Post, one of the biggest postal operators in Europe faced with the challenges of high CAPEX cost from investing in conveyor belt systems and high OPEX cost due to high employee salaries wanted to explore the cost savings that could be achieved by deploying Unmanned Life’s asset-light autonomous solutions while maintaining the throughput levels.

 

Thus, Unmanned Life deployed a system of four autonomous AGVs at Swiss Post’s facilities. This fleet of AGVs were tasked with the responsibility of autonomously sorting e-commerce parcels at a throughput level of 450pph with a high sorting accuracy rate. The fully autonomous sorting solution delivered results that exceeded the agreed KPIs to achieve a throughput level of 465pph with a 0% error rate making the project a success resulting in Unmanned Life being awarded the ‘Best Sorting Centre Innovation of the Year’ at the Post-Expo 2018, the biggest annual event of the postal industry.

BT: First transatlantic 5G flight in partnering with Ericsson, Verizon and Kings College

In 2018, Unmanned Life successfully demonstrated the necessity of ultra-reliable low latency 5G communications for mission critical services in collaboration with BT, Verizon, and Ericsson. This was done by successfully deploying autonomous control and management of a fleet of drones in central London, which was launched from the US by Verizon, on a dedicated 5G network slice within BT’s network. Use cases such as delivery of emergency kit, HD imaging for search missions, and temporary cellular network were demonstrated at King’s College London using a swarm of drones launched from the US.

At the end of 2018, Unmanned Life kicked-off its cooperation with Deutsche Telekom, one of the world’s largest telco operators with 168 million mobile customers in the framework of its hub:raum 5G Low Latency Prototyping Program. This program is dedicated towards startups that need 5G network connectivity and low latency edge computing to deploy mission-critical use cases.

Having been selected as one of the top-15 fast-growing companies chosen to work directly with Deutsche Telekom, Unmanned Life developed a pilot solution which was presented at Deutsche Telekom’s 5G Eco System Summit in July 2019. Unmanned Life integrated with Deutsche Telekom’s 5G network infrastructure and MobileEdgeX’s edge computing platform to control a swarm of autonomous drones and land them with centimeter precision accuracy demonstrating capabilities required for different use cases.

The significance of this cooperation went beyond the Low Latency Prototyping Program. Post the successful completion of this program, Unmanned Life is now developing solutions in collaboration with Deutsche Telekom to be deployed at their customers’ facilities demonstrating the central role that Unmanned Life’s software platform will play in driving the 5G economy.
