Empower Women and Celebrate Women’s Day With UL
It is time to bridge this gender gap if we want to have a better future for our industries.
Gender disparity in STEM and the wider tech sector is a very common issue and women are still underrepresented in technical and leadership roles. It is time to bridge this gender gap if we want to have a better future for our industries. Organisations will have to widen their recruiting channels to ensure and encourage inclusivity because women bring more diverse and gender-neutral products, innovation, and services.
Unmanned Life is a tech start-up that is leading by example because we value every individual’s contribution in the workplace and encourage any efforts to improve employee well-being, diversity, equity, and inclusion. To celebrate International Women’s Day, we asked our female team members to share their feelings about being a part of the tech industry and an employee at Unmanned Life. Lidia de la Torre – Robotics Engineer
Since I was young, technology has been something that has caught my attention and that is why I decided to study engineering. To be able to build something from scratch, to discover modern technologies, to challenge your limits … As a woman working in the Tech world, I have never felt any difference, but I do believe that it is necessary for women to occupy roles that, classically, have been more occupied by men, and to be visible. It is important that there are references so that the girls of future generations can feel reflected. To see that being in a job in the world of technology is among their possibilities, if that is what they want to dedicate themselves to. If we don’t have women to inspire us in these fields, it is very difficult to take this path. I have met younger girls who are not even aware that they can work in something like me. I think having women in the teams can offer a different point of view on how to approach a problem and this is beneficial for the whole team. There are more women in tech now, but there is still work to be done and it is everyone’s responsibility to make this happen.
Ieva Mateinaite – Business Manager
I feel that I´m a part of a team which is working extremely hard towards the same goal / purpose. I´m also highly driven and motivated executive that has spent over 10 years successfully delivering against every target. I build strong connections and network extensively to transform relationships and elevate business propositions that result in value and growth to Unmanned Life. Being a woman in STEM in these times that we are living in, I find it unique and inspiring.
Daniela Muñoz – Operations Manager
I am very proud to be part of a company like Unmanned Life. I believe that every day there are more women in technology and that we are breaking down barriers and norms that should never have existed. I also believe that female leadership and diversity in the workplace is beneficial for companies, but it is also inspiring for young people and girls who aspire to work in the technology field. My advice is do not choose a career because it feels like a safe choice or what people advise you. Finding something you love to do and that keeps you interested is much more fun. If you are passionate about something or want to learn something new, there has never been a better time to go for it.
Kate Zemouri – Marketing Officer
“Tech”, how complex sounds this sector, right? I would have never imagined myself in a robotics/technology company but sometimes life just brings you to the right place, in the right moment and things go with the flow. It’s already been a year working at Unmanned Life and not only has this brought me a lot of work experience but also personal insights as I am respected, listened and valued as a human being, no matter my gender. Tech is not only for men, please do not let anyone make you believe that you cannot do it and apply for more techie positions. We need to be inspired by each other, the more #WomenInTech, the more #WomenEmpowerment.
Elia Zaidi – Communications Officer
As a communications officer for a tech start-up, I enjoy creating content about innovation, tech businesses, products and services that are shaping and transforming our world for a better tomorrow. It is challenging at times but equally fulfilling. Working for a company that realises the contributions of women at workplace, I appreciate the flexibility I get to work around my personal life. With 2 young kids, I get to quench my creative thirst without compromising on motherhood. It is a blessing! I would encourage more women to become a part of this sector and break the gender bias. #WomenEmpowerment.
Claire Joy – Operations Officer
When I arrived in this company, I had some misconceptions about my gender as I knew that there would be most men. But it did not take me long to realize that it was pointless. I feel like a woman member of a whole where everyone is listened to and heard without having to do more. I even believe that as a woman, we have some advantages from it. Indeed, being surrounded by men, I realized that they often take care of us! And as women, we bring them sunshine and smiles. Working at Unmanned Life is even better because we are in a young environment, with open minds. It is so motivating!
Looking at the testimonials it is sufficient to say that the tech industry and other sectors that don’t recognise the importance of women in workplace are missing out. Women have not only proven to be great leaders, but they can double your talent pool and improve your company’s performance. No organisation is perfect, but it is the effort to support and work on gender bias which counts. At Unmanned Life we understand the contributions of women in workplace and are working towards our goal of reaching an equal number of employees and leaders amongst men and women alike. The time to break the bias is NOW. So, recruit, reshape and support #WomenEmpowerment.
